Marvin Minsky, the father of Artificial Intelligence, once said: «Most people are convinced computers cannot think and empathize with humans».
Netflix has recently launched a Russian TV show, entitled “Better than us”, set in the near future where humans and robots live together. A last-generation robot, named Arisa, turns out to be smarter than the rest and even behaves like a human being.
It seems that reality has overcome fiction. In less than a hundred years we have moved from a rural society to a hyperconnected and globalized society. Although humanity is beginning to recognize the positive implications of this technological revolution, a climate of fear and insecurity has been installed with respect to the impact it will have on employment and human relations.
In order to put an end to this common feeling of helplessness, the European Union decided to legislate. In 2017, the European Parliament began to develop rules on the use of Artificial Intelligence that contemplate the relationship between humans and robots, equality in access to robotics and data processing. The entry into force a year ago of the General Data Protection Regulation reinforced even more the privacy of the users.
We are living the future that so many books and movies predicted. The robots are already here and it is time to dictate the rules that guarantee their coexistence with humans, because this is no longer unstoppable.
